The program explores the fossil of "Selam," also known as "Lucy’s Child." Paleoanthropologist Zeray Alemseged spent five years carefully excavating the sandstone-embedded fossil. NOVA’s cameras are there to capture the unveiling of the face, spine, and shoulder blades of this 3.3 million-year-old fossil child. And NOVA takes viewers "inside the skull" to show how our ancestors’ brains had begun to change from those of the apes.Why did leaps in human evolution take place? "First Steps" explores a provocative "big idea" that sharp swings of climate were a key factor.

三集分开页面了一并打星。 700万年前的乍得沙赫人，人和黑猩猩的共同祖先。“直立人”生活了约500万年，图尔卡纳男孩，奇特的古猿人特征，性成熟早、幼儿期短从进化成果的角度看反而是劣势。

从乍得人猿Toumai到南猿Lucy和Selam，300万年间气候相对稳定地干旱，学会直立行走，但脑容量几乎没有变化；从南猿到能人，有20万年里东非气候变化剧烈，想钟摆一样在干-湿之间交替反复，能人脑量几乎比南猿翻倍，也学会使用石器。进化是适应环境剧烈变化的结果。
